I asked a question a little while ago about fairy tale sand fantasy and why we don't strive to make them real if we like them so. I received many interesting answers but they al centre red around one central theme, we live in the 'real' world.

While our universe has laws of physics (Chaos Theory, Small World Effect, Thermodynamics, Random Chance, etc.) that prevent the more outrageous parts of fairy tales and fantasy like magic spells, magic creatures, destiny, etc. We are still capable of shaping the world to the way that we wish it to be, this one of the defining characteristics of humans.

So if we can shape the world to our will and if we have our fantasies of what the perfect world would be, why are we unable to make it happen?

AND

What is it about us as humans that makes us make the world the way that it is today?

Serious answers only please.

Please don't say that it is the fault of money, those in power, etc. because we have the ability to change it.

I think the world isn't perfect- and the way we fantasise it should be for a few reasons:

1. we don't all beliebe we CAN change things, or get/do what we want- though I agree with you we have the potential.

2. it is hard to change things- very hard- because there is opposition. it's not "money's" fault- but there are people who simply fantasise about being wealthy- or famous- this can affect the world and ultimately my day to day life- and my ability to achieve what -I- want.

bear in mind, that maybe what I want- completely contradicts what you want.
so, if I got what I wanted- the world would be "perfect" in my eyes- I am sure it would bear many flaws in your opinion.

add to that simlicity in the saying "perfection is unatainable".
you can't always succeed, and get what you want, sadly, and the world seems imperfect and unfair for this.

it also comes back to the point where people don't believe they can make it closer to perfect- either because they failed to many times to shape things as they saw fit- either because they were too scared to try...

there are too many variables which have to be taken into acount while talking about "the world" - too many entities, too many particles... it's hard to balance it all- and I think really it is quite balanced- "good" VS "bad" that's why it is unstabled- because there is a constant motion between the two. between happiness and saddness.

I am just sad to see each day that more and more people are "depressed"- and really hate this world- instead of trying to re-shape their own life and enviroment.

I keep changing myself to fit my enviorment, I accept what's around me- and I hope from now on to stick to what -I- want, and try to make my own personal world as close to my own ideal scene.

I hope this answeres your question.
this is only my opinion, writing is at I thought it after reading your question.. hope it makes sense

good luck!

Many people DO try to make their fantasies into a reality. The biggest problem that seems to arise is that they're not all trying to create the SAME fantasy!

Which is part of the point. No matter what the world was like, there would undoubtedly be people who longed for a different one. Some people long for equality, some for dominance; some desire material riches and others spiritual ones. Can everyone be happy at once? It seems unlikely. We are just too varied as people.

And then there's another interesting point: the distinction between fantasy and reality is largely in our minds. Children are not the only ones for whom completely fantastic things are completely real. Of course, those individuals who go too far in this direction sometimes have trouble interacting with the rest of us. But it's still, I think, a valid question - why re-shape the universe when all we have to do is re-shape our own minds?

When information is, at times, more important than what it is describing (as it often seems now) perhaps we're closer to dwelling largely in our own minds than most would think...

The world is BETTER than fantasy. Why must man create fantasy in the first place? Historically, most fantasy was actually written as allegorical expresions of the spiritual purpose of mankind.
Fantasy according to one dictionary definition is the creation of unrealistic or improbable mental images in response to a psychological need.
I personally do not need fantasy because I am fully satisfied with the REAL world -with all of its imperfections.
Yes there are laws -not only of physics, that exist to bring order into the world and into our lives, but without them I doubt any man would be truly happy.
Fantasy is not real therefor it is not truth, meaning it is a lie and the wonder of lies it that they are decietful and feel good for a time. A Fantasy of whatever kind -video game fighting fantasy, sci-fi fantasia, sexual fantasy, knight-in-shining armour kills a dragon fantasy IS NOT REAL and cannot satisfy.
Belief and faith make the real difference...

not believing in something won't make it not real and believing in a lie doesn't make it truth!

this world is NOT all physical, but is also not a fantasy. There are powers, principalities, angels, demons, good, evil, physical and spiritual. The devil's best deciet in western culture is to blind culture from the spiritual world and the influence it has in the physical. the two are not seperate, but most are blinded to the existance of the spiritual -or are taken up with ESCAPING the physical to be part of a magical, spiritual world. why not have the best of both worlds? Physical AND spiritual -that's how we were designed and we cannot be satisfied until we find the truth and LIVE it (not a fantasy)
If you are TRULY seeking an enswer to this, a grea historical book,-including REAL (not fantasial) dragons and a very REAL powerful explanation of both the PHYSICAL world and the spiritual world is none other than the Bible -don't be scared off by the title or throw it aside because of any preconceived ideas but read it with a critical and open mind and you will find the answer to your question. start with Genesis which talks about a REALLY perfect world and also gives hope of perfection again.

you are right though-the world is NOT perfect and it SHOULD be and I believe it WILL be again-although not by man's effort, right now everything is going from good to bad to worse -another LAW of physics -interesting no? if metal rusts, trees die, houses fall apart, order goes to disorder then doesn't that throw out the whole theory at life is evolving? if it was then you'd think we would be living fantasies by now instead of living in a world LESS beautiful than it was when fantasy and fairy tales were made polurar. oh and what is it about man that makes the world the way it is today? We are fallen-imperfect-unrighteous-incapable of doing good-sinners. thats what. the world is hopeless if left in the hands of man. we need God.

I am constantly plagued by the idea that the world as we know it now is the way that it is supposed to be. This is a very dangerous way of thinking because it makes actions seem pointless. (It even takes away my motivation sometimes.)

I don't know why we are unable to shape the world in the best way possible. Maybe there are just too many conflicting minds. Maybe there are too many conflicting forces--actual earth/universe forces. I want to think that we can change things substantially but I think it would take a great human force to do so because it would have to reach the masses and the great minds that seem to be hiding in the sidelines.
The answer to your kind of question would take me a very very long time to try and sort out in a coherent manner at the moment...

Fairy-tales are nothing but reality clothed in symbols and metaphors. Magic spells, magic creatures, destiny, etc. all exist. As to shaping the world, we are not the only ones shaping it. We can't make the world the way we would like it to be because there are other forces/creatures who are trying to shape it to suit them. We can make changes to the part of the world WE live in when we change ourselves -- one person at a time.

Because we all have differing fantasy's!?!? You do realize humans are variants, don't you? You seem to speak as if there was some " essential " human. Or, perhaps an " identity " of man. Who are you to give " the one defining characteristic of humans ". A scientist is able to hold in his mind two concepts at the same time; that there is a universal human nature and that humans are variant. You, obviously, are not doing that. So, you truly do not live in " the real world ".

Our real world deals with the tanigble. It relates to the material world and the spirit world. These two elements are always in conflict with each other, that's why we encounter so much turmoil.

In regards to fantasy, this always relates to hope. Hope is the ONLY element which did not come out of Pandora's box. Therefore the reason why our real world will never be like that of fantasy is because Hope is forever trapped in fantasy. Hope and wish are similar and they both exist in fantasy.

The new book "Another Thought" by OC Tross explains fully what is fantasy.

As Robert Heinlein wrote: One man's magic is another man's technology. The fact is, we just aren't there yet, and I highly doubt that we will see such tech in our lifetimes.

On top of all that, we're still learning. (Yes, I know; I put the cause after the effect.) The problem is that as long as we're still learning about how the universe works, we're going to make mistakes. Look at history, and you should understand my reasoning.

Can we still shape the way our world/universe works? Yes, but we must be patient. Until all the ducks are in a row, we won't make very much progress. But I do believe it will happen; I'm just sad that I probably won't live to see it.

Of course, maybe we'll get lucky...

If we were able to make them happen , literally, then they would no longer be "fantasies" but they would be real and entertaining yourself would become mundane.
Exceptional people are exceptional because they can do things that the rest of us can't. If we could it would all be ordinary and boring.
If we were all prodigies, then there would be no prodigies.
That's why fantasies are fun for the most part and I have never been disappointed in a fantasy.
Then again there is the theory that everything in our lives is a projection of our fantasies ( or thoughts ).
Go figure!

i agree with you, in that we have alot of control over making our fantasies real,,,,,,,its all in the basic core of how you accomplish anything, you set a major goal, but then steps and small goals,,,,,, in some countries, there are more restrictions and less opportunity, but in most, such as the USA,,,,,, we can change most anything,,,,,,,,,
a major part i think, is if we believe we can ,,,,, or do we get stuck in the rut of our environment or what others think is possible,,,,,,,
if a person wishes for their fantasy to come true (and lets accept that some dont,,,, ) then they should start down the path towards it, even if they dont reach it,,,,,, they will learn as they take the journey,,,,and might even find other things that then become their goal or fantasy,,,,,
i once wanted to be a keyboard player in a band,,,, so i took lessons, then drifted from that fantasy,,,,,,, yet later when my daughter was born,,,, i taught her keyboard, she could play at 3 years old,,,,,,,, and is very talented now,,, with keyboard, clarinet,,, sax,,, would my fantasy of been to have a gifted in music child ? yes ,,, but i didnt think of that one ,, lol
i use to have a fantasy that the would should/could be nice, and people always act respectful,,,,,, i certainly was willing to be an example and preach it,,,,,,, till i learned i was judgemental,,,,,, what right did i have to tell people how to be,,,, and that they were wrong in how they were
