Simple answer, your god is a fictional character made up by very smart people long ago as a means of control; just like any other god from any other civilization. Also, it is an easy way to explain hard to answer questions, if you are willing to believe it. Your are on the right track by asking these kinds of questions. You will find the more questions you ask, the more religion fails to give credible answers, and every answer comes down to "cause the bible says so".
Viruses are living things just like people. They are trying to survive just like us. A simple answer is a virus feeds on us like we feed on animals.
Of coarse this is just my opinoin, if religion makes you happy, don't listen to me!

Well, maybe because 99.9% of people will die somehow or another. Virises are alive too and they must feed!
