My husband and I both smoke in our house. Every day when I get home from work, there is a stale smoke smell lurking in our house. What can I do to keep it under control other than candles or opening windows (we live near chicago so that's not an option at the moment with the weather).

please also dont answer with "stop smoking in the house".

i''m only here asking to hear SERIOUS answers.

anyone know of a real remedy that doesn't involve candles or insense to just cover up the smell?

I have the perfect product to get rid of the smoke and other odors that I've used for years and know dozens of other people that use it. It is a product called FRIDGE IT odor absorbers. It is a little purple cube with an incredible activated carbon filter inside that is really, really, great. It works so much better than baking soda and all those sprays and fragrances that just cover up smells and doesn't get rid of them. Also, alot of sprays have warning statements about being eye irritant. The carbon literally absorbs and eliminates the odors and works for a long time. Just put some of these little cubes around the house and problem areas. I use this product everywhere including car, storage, closets, my fridge and also under sinks, near trash and have friends that use it in car for smoke, on cat litter box and also diaper pails - it's that good. I really recommend it. You can buy it in kitchen gadget sections in stores like walmart and linens and things. I also think camping world sells it. Definitely worth trying.

Try an Odor Absorbing Gel, such as Natural Magic or Nature's Air Sponge (http://housewares.hardwarestore.com/35-176-odor-removers.aspx). Regardless of what you get, you'll have to replace them regularly since they "wear out". For a whole house, you'll have to have several. Add to that an Ionizer. You've seen them in the Sharper Image catalog. They really do work, but you'll have to clean them regularly.

Good Luck!

try "Febreeze"- works like a charm for me!

ps- there is no magic cure for smoke in the house, you say, "don't tell you to not smoke in the house, you don't want candles or insense..............." What are you looking for?
My husband and I both smoked, but we have 3 kids, so we would never light up in the house. Take it on the front or back porch.

My mother in law has a ton of mothballs in her closets. She smokes but I honestly couldn't tell the first time I met her. The mothball odor completely consumed the cigarette smoke but the trade off is her house smells like mothballs.

How about purchasing one of those air purifiers.. there are even ones made especially for filtering out tobacco odor. I've heard they really do make it fresher/better smelling.

"febreze" sprayed into the air will mask it out. I visit friends who smoke illegal smokes, and febreze is what they use to knock out the odor.

Emphysema will do it. I was a two-pack-a-day smoker. Like it or not the best thing I ever did was quit. This really goes to natural selection. I don't want to anger you, really. But you are killing yourself and it matters to many of us ex-smokers who know you can quit.
