I remember reading about a mirror of unknown origin owned by the japanese royal family. It was round or octagonal with unknown characters around its edge. It was lost for some time and then found again.

Sounds interesting. It seems like this is possibly a different mirror from the one I had in mind, but not sure. Anyone else?

Different eras used different materials to make mirrors, and made them in different shapes according to the 'fads' at the time.

Older ones made of polished copper can even be found, with odd shapes with symbols on them, so its really hard to be exact on which mirror you mean.

A Japanese prince,'Takeshi-San',thought that no-one knew that he took hallucinogens. The mirror was called"Kiru-Kiru Pa" and was hectagonal. One evening, the prince, under the influence of this strange fugus, stared into the mirror. His image seemed to change,he screamed, running through the palace in a winter of discontent, finally jumping out through a window.Unlike those two who drove off a cliff,he landed in a huckleberry bush, and was never the same again.
