Of course it is. You have to determine if it's abusive or not. Marketing and advertising uses focus groups to determine what you and your age group tend to spend your money on. then they come up with plans to CONVINCE you to spend your money. Would you come up with a commercial with a speaking lizard to sell car insurance? The field is very manipulative, but they're here to make you feel that you can't live without their product.

Advertising is effective and persuasive. Else companies would not pay millions of dollars for it. So by definition it is manipulative. Manipulative the word has gained a negative connotation. But if you wanted to spin it another way you would just say that advertising influences people to consider your product or service.

We make sure that the strategy we are incorporating is based upon what the market dictates. So, this means that in order for your product to sell, you have to think of your buyers (their preferences, etc.)

Prime examples are cosmetic industry and weight loss industry.
An artificial 'ideal' is created in the ads that not only makes the consumer feel 'less than' but also pushes the 'remedy' - their product.
Subliminal and hypnotic techniques are used in order to generate a consumer response.
