Well I was born and raised in Jamaica so I love it. There are places you don't go, just like anywhere else in the World (especially NY).

For the most part you won't encounter those issues if you go through a travel agent and get a package. It is also very close and the US dollar is much stronger so your money stretches.

The complaints I would make are that some locals harass the tourists too much, especially in Negril (trying to sell you weed or to braid your hair, etc.)

It is definitely fun, the music is alwats great and if you are into snorkeling or scuba diving, it definitely is a place on the must-visit list.

Just don't go during spring break unless you want that whole drunken atmosphere - things are much more expensive during that time. You should come in mid-July and go to Reggae Sumfest in Montego Bay - multi-day reggae festival, open air vibe - real nice. We've had all sorts of performers including Akon, Jay-Z, Destiny's Child, all the top Jamaican acts (Sean Paul, Beenie Man, Shaggy, Bounty Killer) - people fly in from all over the world just for that.

There has been some negative press I've heard lately just about how it may not be the safest place for a women to go, and I can't remember the offer stuff. I would research it a little more the pros and cons, before going just to be prepared for anything. Although there are some parts that are unsafe, if you were to stay on a resort you'd be ok.

I have never been there but it looks pretty, espeically the beaches but in all aspects of reality it's not as nice and beautiful as we think it is, a lot of people are actually quite poor there and some areas are stricken with severe poverty...at least that's what I heard.

I've been there and it's pretty. My husband was born and raised there, so he showed me places most tourists don't see.
