In the United States the Republicans are considered the major conservative or 'right' party, and the Democrats are considered the major liberal or 'left' party. Other smaller left and right parties do exist-- the libertarians are the most prominent small right wing party and the greens are the most prominent small left wing party. Neither can expect to get more than a small percentage of the vote in a national election. For a more complete list go to www.politics1.com

dear eliot 3454
In its essence, the left likes to think that the government is the answer to all things. Everything can be completely controlled, regulated, and supervised by the state to the better welfare of all.
If you believe that, look at what you got now and tell me how much better things would be if the liberal left was in charge.
To be succinct, the right believes that the less government the better, and that people have the right to self-determination with as little government control as possible.

Left and right are not parties, but political social structures. Left tends to be more liberal. Meaning, they believe in things like social programs and lean towards the more human side of politics. Right tends to be more conservative and focus more on lower taxes and business, are against things such as social programs because they feel it's a waste of tax payers money.

Are you talking about the political spectrum?

In a linear political spectrum, there are two sides and two main political philosophies:

Left <------>right
Equality ------ Freedom
Communism - socialism - democrat -republican- anarchy

Democrat and republican are actually very close to the center, with communism and anarchy at both extremes.

There is also a political spectrum that is in the form of a diamond that more closely reflects the ideals of today.. where the top represents limited government and the bottom represents a very large government.

------- libertarian

liberal ----- conservative

-------- stateist

Hope this helps!

Why move left or right when you can move forward? VOTE LIBERTARIAN.
The diamond, or matrix, description of American ideologies is more accurate than the old two dimensional number line. Ask two questions:
Do you favor government involvement in business activities?
Do you favor the expansion of personal freedoms, including medical ones?
