Steatite is a particularly soft type of metamorphic rock that carves easily, conducts heat well, and can be used for cooking directly over a fire. Quarries used by Native populations have been documented along a steatite band that runs from the north-central part of the state toward the northwest.

Most Steatite (Soapstone) is now mined in MA and VT. Try looking here: Osborne Soapstone quarry, Blandford, Hampden Co., Massachusetts, USA

Bemis soapstone quarry, Townshend, Windham Co., Vermont, USA

also try: Francestown Soapstone quarry, Francestown, Hillsborough Co., New Hampshire, USA
