i agree with the person above me.

first, most important thing is to be able to READ it.
second, understand it.
sparknotes has a great "no fear shakespeare" book series that helps alot,.

if you're going to do a shakespere monologue, i recomend katherine's end monologue in taming of the shrew (act 5 scene 2.)

good luck,.
:D

Understand what you are saying. It is one thing to know lines of Shakespeare by heart, but it's another thing entirely to understand and to feel the emotion of the words being said. Put yourself in that players mind/time frame and just 'be'. Also, I agree with the first comment: Do not overact. Otherwise, you'll look like you are performing a skit from Monty Python.

PS: The Shakepeare movies in which Kenneth Brannagh (sp?) has a role are a good starting point to base Shakespearean acting skills. Just... pay attention to the other players. Brannagh tends to be a bit over the top. :)

Most people who audition for a Shakespearan Play-go overboard with their acting - DO NOT OVERACT. That's the most important part. Also, don't stare at a single person in the theatre, move your eyes around and use your hands. Don't leave them in your pocket or at your side.

rent some of the greats.... Polanski Macbeth, royal theater productions on DVD. Study what works and doesnt work (based on whether you get a chill from the words or not). Good luck.
