someone mentioned head gasket one easy way to check if its damaged the gasket is unscrew the cap off the radiator and there may be traces of oil in the water if its been running roughly like that for some time check the uderside of the radiator cap as oil can collect as a residue on there as well, this will tell you oil blowing straight through meaning head gasket could be gone it is repairable though very expensive i wouldnt like to have an a-class head skimmed. no no no, ;) that aside it may not have blown the gasket at all definately drain a bit out and i agree with the other chap check ya plugs and give it a good service.

Yes drain the oil to the right level.... your car has been running poorly... when is th last time you did a tuneup? I would give the car a complete tune up and change the oil. I just tuned up a car I bought and the spark plugs were so bad, 1 was broken, no center electrode... 1 was shorted and the other 2 so badly worn, I dont know how the car ran... they probably had 50K + on those plugs. Most people neglect their cars.... it is sad...

Its just as bad putting too much oil in ur car as not enough, u can blow the seals for a start, try draining some out.

too much oil can be as bad as too little, its making your engine work harder dont ignore the light it will not go away on its own drain some oil[quite simple ]or book it in for cheap service as oil change is part of basic service.dont let garage con you if your not sure get second opinion main dealers are only out to con you.make sure you are adding correct oil to begin with.

The cylinder head gasket is the number one suspect. The level of oil could well be water. The loss of power points to thehead gasket.Attend it now otherwise you may need a new engine .
