the color purple was her emancipation from her own life. she used the novel to tell her story and to help people understand things in a different light and to give them an insight into feelings that they may never experience. many libraries have actually banned this book because of the race of the person and her life struggles. they say it is just a lot of trash that shouldn't be published...but that is all the more reason for her to write this and to make people understand the true meaning of life. or help anyway.
