Does "Avatar: The Last Air Bender" count as anime?

I was looking at this anime background site and didn't find it; but instead I found Yu-Gi-Oh! I read on a diffrent site that anime is a show made, based and written using a western style of entertainment. But yet both Yu-Gi-Oh and Avatar are both made here in North America. I'm cofsuesd! Please Help
