This question is open to some debate. The first vehicle using mechanicals that directly led to today's automobile was built by Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach, of Germany, in 1889. Other self-propelled vehicles, not counting railroads, had been designed and built for at least 100 years before Daimler and Maybach. However, the 1889 vehicle was distinctive due to its direct evolution from the horse-drawn carriage and, as we all know, was soon mass produced.

I don't know if this is the first one, but rudolf diesel made his peanut oil powered diesel vehicle sometime in the late 1800's
