I've just my Gas bill in which is way to expenisve for the last quarter, (i appreciate in the winter it would be) However, is this because I have a back boiler on my living room gas fire & this probably many years old?? (i've only lived in this property for the last 10months) so i dont know the full history, but generally is it worth getting rid of this boiler?

Turn it off for a billing cycle and see how much it adds to your bill, then you can decide what to do with it.

I know that a lot of the councils are now fazing them out I used to have one and my bills were astronomical it is well worth investing in a new boiler and if i was told right they stopped making back boilers years ago i can t see how they work surely most of the heat goes up the chimney all i can say is that i moved from a 1 bed flat with back boiler to a 2 bed house with combi boiler and I save around £25 - £30 a quarter

Back boilers are no longer available to buy as they are very inefficient. The government have forced manufactures into promoting so called combi boilers that offer very high efficiencies. A couple of things to watch out for 1) The heating system you have in the house was probably installed at the same time as the back boiler and as a result will not work efficiently as a new balanced system. Always ask the installer to explain there installation at the time of getting a quote. 2) With the new home buyers pack you will need to include the paper work that comes with the boiler. One section need to be filled in by the installer (Corgi Reg.) and you need to keep this in a safe place as in future your house will be rated for its overall energy usage.
