I love hermit crabs! I got my first one about 7 or 8 yrs. ago, then I fell in love with them & ended up getting more & more untill I had about 9 of them. They are pretty easy to care for, I had mine in a 10 gal. aquarium with a screen top (they climb). Put about an inch or two of sand & aquarium rocks in the bottom. Put some other shells (all sizes) scattered around & some bigger rocks & drift wood if you have any. They love to bury themselves in the sand & hide behind & under the shells & rocks. Put a shallow dish with water inside, you can buy special sponges to put in to if you want. Hermit crabs need water & humidity to breathe. Never let them run out of water! You can buy hermit crab food at a pet store, give them just a little bit every day. Take out what they didn't eat from the day before, it will spoil fast. They also love crackers, popcorn, cherios, little bits of fruit & vegetables & peanut butter. Always make sure there are shells a little bit larger than they are in now where they can find them. They will check them out & trade shells if they find a better fit. Also if you have more than 1 they can fight over shells if there isn't enough for everyone. Depending on the size of the hermit crab, every few weeks or so, as they grow, they also molt. They shed their outsides & crawl out of them & hide out, either buried in the sand, or under other shells untill their new outsides harden. At first they are soft & can't protect themselves for awhile. They look like they are dead when this is happening, I almost buried mine in my yard before I finally seen it move & relized it was still alive. It didn't move or look like it was alive for 3 days before it finally molted. Then they need to eat their old outsides so they get the nutrients they need to molt the next time. They are pretty shy, they usually hide inside their shell if they see you come around. They come out & move around mostly when it's dark. They will climb all over whatever is in their aquarium, they slip & fall a lot, but they don't get hurt. I hope this helps you & I hope you enjoy your hermit crabs! They can be great pets! Good Luck!!!
