As any good Midwesterner will tell you, the most important of all these is the Northwest Ordinance of 1787. it set aside a portion of each township to be used to build and pay for the upkeep of a school (free education); it banned slavery. Area covered under the Ordinance included Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin, and the portion of Minnesota east of the Mississippi River.
