With the "war on terrorism", the war in the middle east, conflicts in Darfur, the problems that still exist with the Hurricane Katrina survivors, and the fact that racism(toward other groups and inter-racism) as a problem, should we care what movies won (even though Scorese truly deserved it finally) while all the problems exist? Or is the Oscars another excuse to ignore the problems at hand?

I like Al Gore because his work on the environment has inspire me to help out more and of course I like Jesse Jackson except when he keeps reminding me of how he was there when MLK was shot.

You make a completely valid point. If people in the U.S. were as devoted to keeping track of the various military conflicts, health crises, and social problems in the world, we -- as citizens of the single most influential nation in the world -- could really enact some positive change.

(To one of the previous posters): Al Gore didn't win an Oscar. The filmmakers of "An Inconvenient Truth" did. Just because you don't like Al Gore (and I assume you don't like him because you've assumed that disliking him is somehow fashionable), that doesn't decrease the significance of the film, and it certainly doesn't invalidate the claim that global warming is an important issue of our time. You, likewise, may not like Jesse Jackson either, but that doesn't mean that his work for civil rights should be equally disliked. It would behoove you to realize that issues of the environment, religion, and culture are bigger and more important than your petty dislike for the various people associated with those issues.

Cheers.

Good question. We need to worry about Darfur and Middle East but do we go there and help them? but we do go to the movies every other weekend or at least much more than helping other people. These people entertain you so it is OK to see who won, but please for heaven's sake forget it and get on with your life and do not follow news like Brittney Spears shaving her head.

Collective interest and collective action will help any bad situation if you really think you want to make a change in Darfur talk to your friends and do what you can to help the people. It is very little that we can do now. But there are people who have gone there like George Clooney. Ask him, might sound insane but if you ask him as a collective group he will probably respond.

No, it's not that important. But thank goodness we have something to take out minds off the other things for at least a little while. We need diversion once in a while.

I think that every once in a while, people should have a little fun. That's what the Oscars are about. All work and no play makes me a dull girl!
