He tells 99% of the people on Idol they suck. 1 out of thousands sells records after Idol. If the audience had their way, dozens would get albums and no one would buy any of them.
Simon has it right but people don't like to hear the truth.

Simon is both honest and rude. Simon is just one of those straight-forward kind of people that tells a person up front like it is. I think that its a good thing that he calls them out on their delusions that they cant sing rather than letting them think that they can. Hes honest in telling them he truth upfront.
On the other hand Simon can be rude at times. Like for instance if a contestant is overweight he will make some rude statement about their weight or if he dont like their outfit he will tell them that they dress too old.

Both... he's honest and that's what I really like about him. But, he can get a bit obnoxious which is not necessary to give someone honest feedback.
But hay, it's TV. The show wouldn't be as fun, if all the judges were like Paula or Randy.
Have you noticed that the past few seasons, he is a lot nicer?

Lets be fair, how many people go to audition for the show and they cannot sing as well as they think they can. Sometimes their friends/ family have told them they are good and just deluded them into thinking about it.
Simon Cowell just says what he thinks. Do you think he has made his money from being nice to people by appeasing them? No, he has done it by being brutally honest.
It is how the people deal with it that counts.

Simon is both. If I like the singer, I tend to think he is too mean. If I don't like the singer, then I think he is honest. People complain about his honesty, but only because he is right.

Simon Cowell is an entertainer, period. he's as much a part of the schtick as the performers.

i mean, he's honest, but in a mean way. get it? like he could tell the contestants in a nicer but still honest way that their not good enough. and personally i think all those 3 judges are mean because they say that some ppl dont have the "look" for American idol and make fun of gay ppl. how mean:(
i mean, its an entertaining show, but if it was nicer, american idol would have more fans:)

Both. It's a competition for the best and he states what needs to be said, on the other hand he doesn't have the compassion that Randy or Paula have at times to understand where the contestants are coming from.
