If you are Down Center and have to cross up center and exit, do you turn your back to the audience to go to up center? I have been told time and time again to never turn my back to the audience, but won't it look weird if I am walking backwards? Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

as long as you are not talking then feel free to turn, but if it is posable while looking a little natural try doing it at an angle, so u are mostly turning your back but ur not...

Whoever tells you time and time again to NEVER turn your back on the audience is just wrong. ("Never" is a very strong word - one that I prefer not to use). If you are down center and need to exit - and the director asks you to cross up center and exit - then do it. There's not a thing wrong with that.

DON'T walk backwards. That would look really lame!!!

blocking should look natural..you should always know why you are making what movement

if you think you're character would enter backwards (perhaps something incredible just happened and you are in awe) than do so, but in most cases it would seem awkward and fake

the only exception is if you are saying dialouge but that would give you a reason to be walking backwards

hope this helps!

If it feels weird, you should talk to the director about it. If the director wants you to do it, you should find a reason for your character to do it.
