The left lane is not necessarily the passing lane. That is only the case when it is marked as a passing lane with a sign or when you are on a two lane road (one lane in each direction) and there is no double yellow line. On multiple lane roads, you should stay in your lane and you may pass people on your left or right. If you decide to pass someone, you simply give a signal and move to the new lane.

To Samantha: When the Interstate Highway system was first designed, the engineers intended for the left most lane to be a passing-only lane. The main reason this is no longer the case is the traffic on the freeways increased to capacity far raster than the engineers had anticipated. (How many people see apartment- for-rent signs that say, "Difficult Freeway Access!")

My opinion is that some people just want to be smart ellics. They get in the passing lane and run right beside other cars going about fifty mph and just stay there blocking the way. It might have something to do with the EGO, i'm not sure. Well, hope this helped.

i don't think it has to do with the ego at all. some people are just oblivious. if they're under the influence of marijuana, they'll drive slower, but might be in the fast lane. if they're under the influence of alcohol, they might be all over the place. someone in a hurry will be rushing in a slow lane, and someone taking their sweet time might end up in the fast lane.
