Having lived in many parts of the world and spending time as a Canadian working for a US based company I am very aware of the different spellings! Before people call others dumb, they should really take care and do a bit of research because that person maybe totally correct according to what their country/culture does. One could end up looking stupid due to their own lack of experience or ignorance.

Anyway, not only are spellings different, but there are different words for the same thing ie lorry = truck, lift = elevator just to name a few. But, what I find most confusing though is the date. The US put month/day/year and CAN, AUS, UK and others put day/month/year sometimes I have to seek clarification on the date! These are a few other things that people should be aware of before they go "name calling". :)

Yeah I realize this. I am an American and I know this is the way words are pronounced and spelled in Australia and The United Kingdom. I purchased a book from England years ago and as I was reading it, I noticed it. I don't think it's dumb at all.

Spelling does not matter. As long as someone knows what you are saying, don't worry about misspelling a word. The real question is, did your misspelling cause someone to misinterpret what you said?

Observe:
"She's quite the bore."
is different from
"She's quite the boar."

So, don't worry about your own spelling or other people's spelling. That goes for everyone. Just pay attention to the words.

You mean to tell me with all the horrific spelling on here that people actually call you on an extra "u"???? No way! That's pretty incredible. You'd think that the people on here that actually have brains enough to spell and use proper grammar, would know that you guys do spell some words differently. I apologize on their behalf. Actually, I ran spell check on one of my answers and it actually gave me the UK spelling of a word I'd typed in US English. Made me wonder if I'd gotten on the right site! : )

Yes, I am very aware of the alternate spellings and would not call a soul dumb for using them.

Yes, we have several different forms of the English language here too, It all goes by what race they are!

I am not saying this to be mean, I am saying that we have several different races in our country with their own way of talking and spelling, so don't everyone go getting their butt hairs in a bunch!

I don't think anyone has the right to can anyone else dumb -- even if they are spelling things incorrectly. There are learning disabilities that make it difficult for people to read and write and calling them stupid just makes them stop trying. It is just a mean thing done by a mean person to make themselves feel superior.

Well, I'm going to have to call you dumb for saying "ppl" because I don't believe that's an English word no matter where you are.
