I have a five year old american shorthair cat. She isn't the most lovable cat in the world, but she never bites. She's very shy, and doesn't bother anyone. My uncle has a dog, Kayla. Kayla is his pride and joy. She goes with him everywhere! Now here's my problem. My uncle was in a serious car accident a couple days ago,and he doesn't have anyone to take Kayla while he is in the hospital. The doctors say that my uncle won't be able to take care of Kayla for AT LEAST 2-3 months. So, we have to keep her here during that time. My cat and Kayla growled at each other and my cat ran and hid. (We can't put Kayla in our basement because she barks the whole time) How do I get them to get along FAST?! Please help!

Just leave them be in time they will be best friends. Watch them carefully though and when you leave the house and no one is there put the cat in a room with her neccessities and your problem is fixed.

You need to kennel the dog while you arent home. And you need to let the dog know this is bad when she growls at the cat. Dogs arent intimidated by cats, they just like to boss them around. A cat only growls back, because it is frightened and wants to scare of the dog.
I do not let my dog me mean to my cats, teach her this isnt right. Out your dog in a kennel and let your cat come up and see the dog. Dont put the cat in the kennel, the dog will come up and bark and growl, playing, and your cat will be even more frightened because it its stuck in a cage with the dog barking at it.
Just find another place for the dog if it doesnt work out, dont make your cat fee un welcomed in her own home.
ASK YOUR VET WHAT TO DO!

Put the cat's food up, where the dog can't get to it or her when she is feeding. They will take a little time to get used to one another's presense. They may not ever be friendly, or even tolerant, but you can reinforce that it's okay by making your cat feel safe... make plenty of high places for her to escape-- a cat tree, shelves, whatever you can clear and show her may help her feel better. Then, just let her be. She hides because that is all she can do. It's hard when they weren't raised together.

Hello! NC
I know of a case like this .
The cat being the first pet and then along came the dog.
When the dog is brought into the house the cat stays out of the way he has a little place where he likes to hide.
When the dog is put out the cat will show his face.
It works like this they have adopted their own routine..
Take care!

If I were in that situation I'd just keep them separated. For example, if the cat's in the living room then keep the dog in another room. This way you won't have to waste your money on canals.

Perhaps for a short while you can get a kennel for the dog or cat and keep them separated while you are not there to referee.

introduce them slooowly. put each of them in a cage, and put the cages next to each other, so they can see each other, but won't hurt each other. wait till they are familiar with each other, then try opening the cages, and let them do the rest.
good luck, and
i hope it works out!
