Whether or not it was legal, we all know that there is a difference between legal and right. The hit was definitely was dirty. Neil was headhunting and he should have gotten a penalty from the hit.
It was also the type of play that turns off many casual sports fans who might otherwise take an interest in hockey. This is more of the same when Bertuzzi got a wrist slap for his "incident" instead of being banned for life like he should have been. If the NHL is serious about its image, that sort of play has to be stopped.

Emilo .... how does one almost leave his feet AND look at the size difference between Neil and Drury and you will see why Drury got the shoulder to the head. Funny when Scott Steven's made all these hits, they were nice body checks but now that it is made against a Buffalo "star" that plays hockey with an edge to his game also ... it is dirty ? If your going to check in hockey then you better be ready to get hit ... if your going to play hockey like Gretzky did ... then question the hit ... like I eluded to earlier .. you live by the sword ,,, you die by the sword ... sorry Drury, don't admire a shot that goes wide or a pass into the corner.

I think your answers are going to fall into two categories - Buffalo fans and nonBuffalo fans.
Most Buffalo fans will think it was a dirty hit. Chris Drury is far too experienced a player to not have his head up just after he passed the puck. He was the last man to have the puck so he was available for the hit.
Both players were hurt by the incident and I don't think there was any intent to injure. But Lindy Ruff was his usual whiny self and cried about it, and put his tuffs on the ice.
I got my fill of Lindy Ruff in the Dallas/Buffalo cup series. At the press conference before the first game, he complained that Dallas were big cheaters then passed the mike to Michael Peca who seemed to have Ruff's hand up is butt as he parroted, "Yeah, they're big cheaters, big cheaters." I have strongly disliked both men since - and I would be opened to changing my opinion of them if I saw one reason to.
Then during the closing minutes of the 5th game when it was so very obvious Dallas was going to win the game and take a 3- 2 lead in the series, Ruff sent his tuffs out to try to intimidate the Stars for the next game. When it didn't work (one of his tuffs got screwed in to the ice which broke his leg,) he cried foul and pounded on the glass and screamed at the Stars coach.
Sounds familiar doesn't it.
Ruff is the problem here, not the hit.

Definately clean. there was no way Neil could have avoided the hit once Drury had passed the puck. Drury also should have known to keep his head up

any hit to the head of the other teams captain is dirty. this isnt unfamilar territory for C Neil is always been a want a be goon. he takes his playing style from one of the dirtiest players who laced up skates. Tie Domi! He should have gotten a 4 min minor for drawing blood a 10 min misconduct and a game misconduct and an indefinate suppension for his hit. and no im not a Sabres fan

Yes the hit was dirty. Drury no longer had the puck and Neil came from across the ice to slam him on purpose. Drury didn't even see him coming. That's just nasy.. and on the team captain.. who isn't large to begin with. If he wanted to play hard, he should have went for Peters or Mair. He should know how to play hockey by now.. but since he's from the Sens... I shouldn't expect anything from him at all I guess....

It was clean. It is LEGAL to hit a player within a few seconds after he releases the puck. Also, the hit was with the shoulder not the elbow. Neil's intentions were obviously bad, but the hit was clean.

for anybody tht says it was clean, u are wrong. neil came all the way fro mthe blue line to hit drury. he went after drury more than 5 seconds he shot the puck. neil almost left his feet and intentially used his shoulder to hit drury's head. if drury had been hit right after he shot it or when he was gonna shoot it, it would be legal, but was clearly a late hit.

Absolutely Clean! Shoulder caught him right in the chops. Gotta keep your head up turning into the middle of the ice. Just ask the Big E.
