I just got offered a job with a significant pay increase (it pays $20/hr vs $12/hr that i am making now)
the problem is that they want me to start wednesday (as in the day after tommorrow)
so do i leave the job i have now in not so great standing or do i give up the opportunity for this major pay increase?
a couple factors:
I have 3 children that could use the extra money
the hours for the new job are better, but it is a longer drive(45-50min vs 35-40 mon)
the new job is a temp job but they are looking for someone permanent

Take it, 8 dollars an hour is a HUGE increase. I think instead of thinking about work distance and etc. think about your kids. They will really see benefit and as a mom I'm guessing that's probably what you would like to see most; your kids being happy.

Wow, you are in a tough spot. Since you have a family go for the money at the temp gig and work so hard that you the top candidate for a regular job. (although you need to find out what a regular employee makes)

Take the money and run from your current job. Do you think they would give you two weeks notice if they were going to fire you. The two week notice and "don't burn any bridges" is just some B.S. that large corporations want workers to buy into so they are scared. In many states a former employer can legally only tell a prospective new employer what your work dates were, job title, job duties & starting and ending salary.

Good Luck

Depends. Are you sure you will be their permanent employee, or will you be looking for another job in a few months? Are you currently in good standing with your present job, or would they even care if you left?

Most employers are understanding when employees get an opportunity to move on. They might be a little busy while trying to replace you, but it's business, not personal.

Kids should always be first, so if this opportunity would definitely be better for your kids, guilt is out of the question. If your current employer doesn't have a good grasp on priorities, of course they won't understand, but who cares as long as your kids are getting the best you can offer?

Everything looked good until I got to " Temp". If it is a temp job, that means that they can change their mind at any time and you have no recourse ( and you would have a hard time going back to where you just walked out ). A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. KEEP YOUR CURRENT JOB until you can take a permanent position and can give at least a week's notice. You could end up with 3 children and no job.

Its always bad to burn bridges. You should give 2 weeks notice to most employers. Specially if they treated you fare. I would be Leary of temp job. Most employers say they are looking for someone full time but this is not always so. They need help now and not later that's why the pay is so high. They only pay it out temporally this way their company doesn't go bank rupt.

I'd say go for it, but explain the situation to your current boss. Tell him/her how much you like working there, but for your family, you can't pass up the opportunity to take the other job. I think you might kick yourself if you stick with this one, unless you really like working there or something to that degree. Anywho, good luck!

Nobody can fault you for wanting to improve your life, but don't expect a good reference from your current employer.
