I used to be a freelance writer. Ive lost all of my contacts, but I would really like to look into getting into a career as a writer doings novels and short story books. Any suggestions? Keep in mind I have five kids and a wife that I am needing to support, so I am looking to get paid doing this.

Almost nobody makes a living by writing. I'm serious. DO NOT quit your day job.

Typical pay for a first-time author is in the neighborhood of $1000 to $1500 dollars in advance, plus royalties. That means you're going to have to have AT LEAST one book published per month or write truly, massively popular books if you want to stay above the poverty level.

I'm not saying don't try. I just don't want to see you spiral into destruction. Develop realistic expectations. Then anything above that is gravy.

If you did well enough freelance then it will probably make getting published easier. Probably the best way to get involved with short stories is to write them for periodicals first. If you want to get into novels it helps to have a couple finished - agents like clients who can make them money too, since they only get a small cut of what you get.

Yes, you probably won't be getting paid massive amounts of money, but still, don't give up.

It is excellent that you've written before, just excellent. All you need to do write a manuscript and find a publisher.

It's not hard to do, either, do a simple search for "novel publishers" and perhaps add your genre of choice to that search and that should result in a decent sized list. Then select one, follow the guidelines, and if you're good, you'll get published.

As has already been said, it is *very* difficult to make a living writing fiction. Almost anything else is easier.

That said, the best way to start writing is to write. I would check out the book "No Plot? No Problem!: A Low-Stress, High-Velocity Guide to Writing a Novel in 30 Days". It is written by one of the founders of the National Novel Writing Month.

Good luck with your writing!

First find a job doing anything. Even freelancing for a local newspaper.

Then sit down and start writing.

Don't think about it JUST DO IT.

The vast majority of writers can't support themselves or families. I suggest you take some writing classes and keep a "day job."

First, learn how to write (writting is spelled writing).
Then, write a sample and send it to some publisher and pray about it.
Then maybe send an email to Oprah about yourself and be happy that you are alive.
Work at an easier job and do your writing on the side until you get started.

GOOD LUCK!
