It is the measure of the resistance force between two objects that are otherwise relatively smooth (not interlocked with teeth for example.) Most common is sliding friction which can be measured as the force needed to pull one object over the other. There is also rolling friction which involves the indentation or bending of a wheel on a surface.

Loss of kinetic energy to heat.

When thing move they tend to upset the attoms in themselves and thier surrooundings. These small attomic motion become heat. due to the second law of thermodynamics, once in the form of heat, thee are limited ways to get the energy back out as work. so in effect it is a one way thing.
