Empowerment is newspeak for delegation. It works something like this: Boss doesn't like some aspect of his job so he seeks out an ambitious dimwit who will do anything that he thinks will improve his image in his bosses eyes. Dimwit gets more work for same money, boss gets rid of nuisance task and everyone goes home thinking they've achieved something.

Empowerment = to give power. Because of the derisive nature of the female gender role in our society, empowerment for women can only be gained by increased social androgyny. In order for women to become 'empowered' in the workplace, or society in general, we need to dissolve the blanket gender idealizations placed upon women: we're are presumed to be less agressive, less capable, less logical than are men ... Until these assumptions dissolve, 'empowerment' is NOT going to happen. Thus, women are not going to be able to 'use' empowerment until they take it, because the dissolution of society's unnatural notions of feminine weakness isn't going to happen until women in power get more exposure to display their capability. If you ask: How can women gain more power/empower themselves in the workplace?, you'll get better results. Empowerment for women is going to come FROM women.

In order to further the cause of empowerment for women in the workplace, women who are getting their foothold in their industry are going to have to shed self-doubt and project themselves as they want to be seen. (i.e., instead of ignoring the sexist comment, call out the person who made it; instead of listening to your female coworkers droll on and on about their incapability, encourage them; instead of sitting quietly through the meeting, speak up with your original ideas; instead of mulling through books, ask your professor for the opportunity to do some field work, etc.)
