Out of those five films, the departed is the best, period. Babel was good, but nowhere near as good as crash, and Babel was atad overlong. Little Miss Sunshine, its very good, but not the kind of film that really warrents a best picture award, like Annie Hall, which for some damn reason won best picture years ago. Letters from Iwo jima, good, but WW2 movies are so overdone today.

Babel and Crash are a new breed of pretentious movies. Contrived, overdramatized , begging to be noticed. The departed and all of Scorsese work is legit. He is the finest director out there. The departed was impressive. It was an awesome film.

This is how it looks to me - Russell Crowe should have got the
Oscar for a Beautiful Mind, but he got it for Gladiator,
Denzel Washington should have gotten it for The Hurricane,
but he got it for Training Day,
Scorsese should have gotten Oscars for Raging Bull & Good
Fellas, but it took this long for the Academy to catch up with
him. Seems like Hollywood honors those who deserve it,
but in some weird, out of order way.
Eastwood will, most likely get a life time achievement next year.

Scorsese deserves it despite all the other movies. He's made a ton of movies and I'm glad he finally got recognized for something.

yes, it was. looking past the obvious violence that is part of
this genre this was the best drama since "the godfather" won
best picture. this was noir and thriller, drama and crime.
scorsese didn't win this by busting his chops on a long set of
non-winners. if this was his first movie, he should have won
hands down. read the interviews. he handled the talent. he
made the scenes come alive. i love movies. don't you?
