My electric oven just started making a perculiar buzzing sound when I put it on to preheat-when I opened the door, the side panel bit inside it was glowing white and smoking like it was about to blow up!
I turned it off straight away, but why did this happen? its quite old i suppose.

the buzzing was caused by the electricity arcing which in turn heated the oven liner, the heat generated by the arc is not hot enough to make the panel white hot,but is hot enough to change
the chemical make up of a "self cleaning" oven, this will give the perception of glowing white spot.the end result is to get a electrician to investigate and repair if its economical

The element is burning out, you should replace both sides as they are the same age, and the other will fail soon, also, one new one will be a bit hotter than the old and you will have more radiant heat on the new side, which will upset your baking!

I am not sure why this happened but you should go out and get one now. If you can't afford one please make sure you unplug it right now...electric oven tend to cause fires a little you don't want to come home and find your house burned down. If it's that old don't even try to have someone to try to fix it. It's not worth it.

Hi Dave

Sounds like the heating element has gone & can be replaced easy enough

That is your heating element going bad , you can replace them very easily. Go to your local hardware store and tell them the make and model of your stove and they will give you the element as well as pointers on replacing it yourself. I did and I am not that into self maintence.

I don't like the sound of that!

I'm tempted to say that there's a short in it, or there's a problem with the heating element.
