Just remember that the world coming to an end has fascinated people since the beginning of time. It is implied by Jesus that he would be returning sometime during the lifetimes of the original 12 apostles. This idea continued throughout the rise of Christianity, that he would be "right back."
During the Middle ages, mud-drenched monks looked back at the majesty that was ancient Rome and were convinced that Mankind's salad days were behind her, and Jesus would be there any minute.
It is also known during the New Years for the year 1000 CE, people prostrated themselves on chruch floors, convinced that Jesus would come at this convenient time.
Right up to the Founding of America. Certain religious folks felt that America was the Kingdom of God on Earth, and were convinced that the 1000 year reign of peace would begin.
Napoleon at the time was widely viewed as the Anti-Christ.
So was Adolf Hitler.
In 1945, the world's first Atom bomb exploded. Oppenheimer was said to have uttered "I am become death, the destroyer of worlds" upon witnessing its power. When the USSR detonated one, people were convinced that nuclear annihilation was imminent.
Anyone remember Heaven's Gate? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heaven%27s_Gate_%28cult%29
How about Y2K?
Nowadays, the current favored end of the world scenario is Global Warming. Just like people were convinced of things like Jesus's return and Nuclear weapons, so are people convinced that we will be nothing more than a burnt cinder on a Venus-like planet.
So... putting it all in perspective, I will say this: No matter what happens, I still gotta get up and go to work tommorrow.

It could be 28 minutes from now or 280 years from now. When the superpowers square off against each other in two camps, then come back and we'll talk apacolpse.
Until then, just think regional conflicts, wars between rump states, proxy wars and brinksmanship. If you recall the Yom Kippur War in 1973, a coalition of Arab States (Egypt, Syria and Jordan) were soundly defeated by the Israelis. That was a worse situation than the current conflict and it didn't raise a blip on the world war radar (not that it didn't have the potential to spark a global war).
The next World War will involve a nuclear exchange, how could it not. In the first 30 minutes, nearly a billion people will have been vaporised, mostly in the US, Russia, Europe, China and Japan. Another 1.5 billion will die shortly thereafter from radiation poisoning. The northern hemisphere will be plunged into prolonged agony and barbarity.
Eventually the nuclear winter will spread to the southern hemisphere and all plant life will die. You ask when is the apacolypse, you are asking when will we commit global suicide. My answer is it won't happen soon because the larger superpowers are more rational than the rump states in the middle east.
Our biggest risk is an accidental launch of nukes by one of the nuclear powers.

umm im not sure - no human will live long enough to see the actual destruction of this planet. I think the "human world" will end with a conflict sparked by lack of food. Bold prediction but if oil runs out most of our food crops cannot meet the required yeilds - Green energy will not make it possible to synthasise chemicals needs for fertilisers and medicines... so we wil have a war over that imperialist idea - territory! simply to feed the dwindling populations of the world.
The entire planet i believe will end up being consumed by the Sun when it expands prior to it becoming a white dwarf.
