He's playing a cancer patient in an upcoming movie and I'm guessing he didn't want to look ridiculous in a wig.

Jack Nickolson dressed to the nines for the Oscars. He is of the old school of movie stars. He was shaved bald because the movie he is currently making requires him to be bald.

That was just Jack being Jack - he is kind of like Britney. _he gets drunk a lot and then shaves his head and says oh this is for a role in a film. Or he dresses like Jabba and gets drunk so it looks normal to him. Just Jack being Jack.
