So, you know how you are a citizen of the country you are born in? What if a pregnant lady goes into space and has her baby in the space station? Or, if at all possible, on the moon? (I know im stretching it, here) But what happens to the baby. How is citizenship decided? I mean, he wouldn't have even been born on planet earth!!

For all of you that said they wouldn't even let a pregnant woman into space... DUH. It was just an interesting thought as to what would happen to the baby even if it was possible.

Children born of U.S. citizens are automatically U.S. citizens no matter where they are born. Actually, they have dual citizenship, because the country where they were actually born also grants them citizenship. In such cases, the child must choose at age 18 which country her or she wants to be a citizen of and renounce citizenship in the other country. I assume people born in space would be citizens of whatever country their parents were from, but they would not have dual citizenship since there are no countries in space (at least not yet).

I doubt that a pregnant lady would be allowed to go into space because of health reasons. If, she was in space though, then I'm sure that the child would become a citizen of whatever county the mother was from, or whatever county she wanted the child to be a citizen of -if they have just moved and she wasn't done with paperwork-.

I think that people would THINK the baby is an alien but it would probably be a citizen of wherever their mother is a citizen. EVEN SO, i highly doubt they would let a pregnant lady into space

Interesting question
I believe the baby would be entitled to citizenship in the:
country of mother's birth,
country of father's birth, and
country where the shuttle touches down (first registered?)
OR ...
I think the baby would be an extra terrestrial and would be hunted down, placed under guard in Area 51 and eventually forgotten about ;-)

All astronauts at lift-off wear diapers. If there was a lady that was pregnant at the time of lift-off , by the time that they were in orbit that baby would be in the diaper.DEAD. So therefore no citizenship.

preganant women aren't allowed to go to (scary) movies, let alone space and the moon!!.... but even if so, i think the parent's nationality will decide. not the space craft, not the landing site nor the original birthplace/nationality of the parents.

the baby would be an alien. he would probably be a citizen of the moon men if they let him.
moon men are known to be very stingy when it comes to humans. but we could probably work things out. he would be the first human moon man.

Even more intriguing, would the baby be able to survive a trip to Earth?
