I'd think about all the ways this could end badly for your cat before I did this. What I would do is:
Volunteer at the local humane society where you will meet great people and get to play with cats that need your attention.
Explain your situation to the landlord. Maybe he would wave the deposit if you paid extra each month towards it. Your landlord must like pets or wouldn't allow them. Take him/her a photo from the humane society of the cat you want to adopt and see what can be worked out. It's worth a try and I think you'll end up with a happy cat and landlord.

Shauna, you are sol when it comes to having a cat without management finding out.
1. Bug spraying days - they come inside to spray.
2. Any maintenance when they need to come inside.
3. Cat in the window when you're not home.
4. The smell; even well-trained cats smell like cats. And where were you planning on hiding the cat box?
5. The carpet; cats tend to kelk up from time to time, even if they don't ever get mad at you and do their dirt in the carpet (which does happen, btw).
I tried an experiment one time when I got one of those lifelike looking sleeping cats from an antiques store. I put "Mockcat" in a straw basket, and it did surprise folks when they came in. I actually almost got in trouble with management until I brought "Mockcat" to the office and showed them he was not a real cat.
One thing I did to avert the monthly pet rent was to trade a carpet exchange for waiving the pet rental fee. That was above-board, but the carpet was truly horrible by the time we finally moved; and from the number of times Bart kelked up, I'd say it was making him sick.
Basically, when you're in an apartment, you have to play by the rules or find somewhere else to live. You might get by for a month or two, but ultimately, you're in constant danger of fines and/or eviction if you do. It's cheaper in the long run to pay the fee. Cheapest yet is to forego getting the cat until you can really afford him or her -- fees and all.
I wish you well!

Hello! shauna g.
Probably not a good idea.
You may find yourself having to part with your pet at some time and that would be heart breaking.
Maybe you could put your loose change in a money box and save the deposit.
Loneliness is one of the easiest problems to over come .
Maybe in the meantime if you love cats so much why not look at joining a club of some sort where they show cats .
Go to web sites where you can look at the different breeds and their behaviours and traits.
With God you are never alone!
Take care!

If you get caught, you and your cat could get evicted. Some cats can cause damage so the landlord is protecting himself financially. Since many places won't allow pets at all, you are actually lucky to have a place that will. If you are thinking about moving to another rental in the future, keep in mind that it's often hard to find places that allow pets.
Also, most humane societies and breeders won't adopt to you if you rent unless you have landlord's permission.

I've done it just make sure to hide them in a bedroom if matinence is supposed to ever stop by. Also we had blankets over are windows so that the cat couldn't be seen. That or you could use some long drapes. If it is that important to you and don't mind if consequences may happen I say go ahead.

you have to be very careful...we have a dog and we're not supposed to...but we see all these other people with dogs and not small ones either...they are pretty big..like a lab or a boxer...so as long as she is quiet and doesn't draw much attention to your apartment you should be ok...if its ok to have the cat there, it probably would be easier if the management knew about it
