The pilot light is out. Contact a qualified gas fitter and he will fix it. Get yourself signed up for an annual service contract to avoid this problem in the future.

Sounds like 2 seperate faults. Battery could be gone on the ignition. Try looking at the bottom of the fire on the left hand side and you might find a 9v battery. Try changing this.
As for the gas flame effect - are you sure it's simply because the fire isn't lighting?

look as to where your pilot light is,and try hoovering this out? if this fails get a can of compressed air from plumbers merchant,and blast a couple of squirts in it. one of the common causes for this type of fault,is fluff/dust in the nozzle? bet you a pound to a penny to a bucket of **** this works?
