For cars with the fuel pump in the tank, which is most of them these days, running it close to empty takes the pump out of the cooling stream of liquid gasoline. If your pump is about to fail, overheating can hasten that process. The symptoms you describe would not have anything to do with it though, in my opinion.
People will tell you "When you get to the bottom, you start picking up crud in the bottom of the tank." Where to you think the pickup is in the tank? On top? Nope, it's always at the bottom whether there are 26 gallons of fuel or 0.25 gallons.
When it gets low enough of course, you start sucking air, and it won't run on air.

If younever actually ran it out of gas before you filled it, it's probably a coincidence... unless you sucked up some crud from teh bottom of your tank. Or you got a load of bad gas, did you get it at a cut rate station? Near the end of the month when their ground tanks might be low? Anyway try changing the fuel filter, just a thought.

you sucked up dirt from the bottom of the tank, the first thing to do is change the fuel filter and then get a bottle of Lucas fuel injector cleaner and dump it in the gas tank, if this doesn't get it running better you will have to take and have the fuel injectors machine cleaned at a shop.

whilst the tank gauge hits empty you often have a 20 mile reserve. it is not counseled to permit the tank get that vacant because of the fact of water and airborne dirt and dirt interior the backside of the tank, that's a superb thank you to a minimum of plug up your gasoline filter out; that's a superb theory to start up searching for a gasoline station once you hit 1 / 4 tank. maximum gasoline is used for the period of acceleration, so advance up extremely and tension extremely ... and carry on with the 1st gasoline pump sign you notice.

an empty tank can develope CONDENSATION . this is water when put together , with some of the finer thing that linger in the bottom make one hell of a stop on detonation or fuel flow .just run it through ,raise your idle a bit for a while .
check timing , get some anti-water . auto zone has, its pink .

You probably picked up some trash from the bottom of your tank and partially clogged something in your fuel system. i.e. filter, fuel line, carburetor, injector. Take it to a mechanic and have them clean the system.
