At what week in your pregnancy do they first check to see if the baby is okay (ex: down syndrome)? is it through ultrasound or blood test?

They do an ultrasound when you first become pregnant to make sure the egg implanted in the correct place. Between 12-16 Weeks you get a pregnancy screening blood test to test for birth defects, if anything comes back positive then they follow with an amniocentesis. At 18-20 Weeks they do another ultrasound to check that the baby is growing normally and there are not any abnormalities, that is also when you can check the sex of your baby. At 7 months they do the glucose tolerence test to check for gestational diabetes.

Usually this test is done at 12-15 weeks. There are two different tests; one is the nuchal fold test which counts the space between folds on the baby's neck. This is done by ultrasounds

The other is the maternal serum test, which is both a blood and an ultrasound test. Usually only one test is offered, depending on what is done more usually in your area.

Neither of these tests confirm whether the child has an issue; they only give you a percentage chance. If the percentage is higher than normal, the doctors may recommend an amniocentesis, which involves a needle being inserted into the mother's abdomen. Amnio can give a definitive diagnosis, but this test carries a risk of miscarriage of about 1%.

Both the serum and nuchal fold tests carry a high "false positive" result, which means that you may be advised your baby has a high risk of Down's but they don't actually have the disorder.

Because of the risk of miscarriage associated with getting a full diagnosis, many women opt to skip the test completely, particularly if they are not over 35 and have no family history of these diseases.

By 16 weeks you will have blood tests done to check for spina bofida and other detectable problems.

Usually between 18 and 21 weeks you will have another ultrasound.

If you are over 35 they will give you the amniocentisis test.

Its both and they check for different things by the ultrasound and your blood test. Your first visit is when your doctor wants to see their patients. A lot of the doctors I'e used and have called before wont see you until you are at least 10-12 weeks along.

They do genetic testing at your first pre-natal appt, If you want you can have CVS done between 12-16 weeks. But there are risks to the procedure. Ultrasounds are done at the OB's discretion.
