I think that some people are morally opposed to the use of antidepressants because of basic ignorance about the nature of depression. They seem to make a divide between "physical" and "mental" health. In reality, we are all physical beings. Our moods, emotions etc. are caused by electrochemical reactions in our nervous systems, although we "create" those by reacting to events, people, situations, and so on. For some people, there is a definite improvement in mood when certain neurochemicals are enhanced, such as making serotonin more available through the use of SSRI medications, and making both serotonin and dopamine more available with other a/d meds. I think that the opposition to a/d medications is something that people just need to get over. Most are not morally opposed to using medications to treat cancer and other serious illnesses. The death rate from Major Depressive d/os is very high--not just suicide but accidents and diseases from lowered general immunity to pathogens. Antidepressants are very helpful in reducing the symptoms, and therefore the suffering, of many people with depressive disorders. Together with "talk therapy" interventions, they can help pull many people out of the pits of depression and into leading happy, successful lives. I've seen it happen!

I do not understand the reasoning behind such opposition to antidepressant medications but I agree that the Scientologists are behind a good deal of the bad press that antidepressants get. But then, they look to a science fiction novelist as some kind of god or guru--how rational is THAT?

I think many oppose drugs because they feel it is something that will only cover up the problem, but once you are off of them, the illness or depression may come back. I suppose they want people who have problems to face it and work on it w/o drugs, to overcome it for good.

Because they believe that to use an outside force to alter our chemical makeup is to admit fault in our design.

Of course for some- it is likened to Drug Use. It doesn't matter the reason- it is a mood altering substance that isn't natural to the human body.

The scientologists? They just think psychology is a scam...

Which I find really friggin funny.

Some people believe that depression is a chemical imbalance. While others believe that it is an emotional problem cause by personal issues (ie: relationships, self esteem, abuse, lifestyle)
The people that are against it feel that these issues that could be causing depression have to be addressed to have true healing.
