I used to talk baby talk to my cat - especially when I was about to put those drops on his neck every month that stops fleas.
However I still used to get scratched.
Then, a couple of months ago I changed tactics. I said to the cat, "Now look here, cat. You are not a kitten any more (he's 10 years old) and I'm not going to treat you like one. I'm going to put this stuff on your neck because we don't want your rotten fleas in the house. When I've done it you're not going to get a bowl of warm milk - you're just going to have to get on with it."
I did it - and there was no fight, no screaming or meowing and no scratching. I did the same last month and again - nothing.
No more baby (or kitten) talk.

The funny thing is I had pets all my life & never baby talked to them until I met my boyfriend. His whole family baby talks their pets and they got me started on it. Now my family thinks I'm crazy!

Oh but of course. I refer to my husband as daddy and
myself as mommy. They are both girls so when one of the dogs gives the other one a lick I always say did you just give sissy a nice kiss. I imagine all my neighbors think
I am nuts the way I talk to them outside or when we go for
our walk. They are my kids that I never had...

yeah i do, they respond to that. My dog always listens and perks up when i talk to her like a baby.
