I know that they are going to disapprove, but I am mature enough, and we are going to wait to actually get married after we've finished college. I just don't want them to be upset, so how do you think that I should tell them? OR should I just wait a year or so to tell them? We've been together for 3 years and I'm pretty sure they know it's going to come sooner or later...

I wouldn't be so concerned about it, but then again I don't know your parents or their values. What makes you think they'll disapprove?

It sounds like you're demonstrating quite a lot more maturity and responsibility by waiting this long. After all, you've been together for 3 years, so you probably have a fairly good idea as to whether you're sure that you want to make this commitment. You're also going to wait until you've both finished college, so you won't be stressed about completing a degree at the same time as planning a wedding.

I think you should both tell them, especially if you're "pretty sure they know it's going to come sooner or later." However, the more answers you have for them, the better (not only for them but also for yourselves), regarding how you plan to begin a life together, where to live, educational plans, and all that.

Keeping it a secret can only result in them wondering what other secrets you two have been keeping. Not off to a good start if you're hoping for their blessing.

As a parent of an 18 year old, who has decided to get married 1 week before she graduates highschool, I say be honest, and tell them. Also listen to what they have to say. Just because we parents are "older" doesn't mean we don't know what you are going through as far as your feelings go. Parents want whats best for their children, and try to protect them from being hurt. And remember, they love you even if they don't agree with the decision you have made.

The best way to tell your parents is to just tell them wether or not they approve just get it out in the open discuss with them your plans and show them that you are mature enough waiting will be harder on you then them in the long run it will be on your mind and you will worry more and more about what they will say or not say. I know it will be scary but it will make you and your parents feel better in the long run.

Honesty is the best policy. If you've done wat you've done, you feel they should know, then let them know. No matter what happens, you need your parents behind you. Especially at this age. Means if anything happens to you during this period with your BF or shud i say fiance, you have your parents. They WILL get upset, but your still their child, they'll forgive and forget. Just make sure they can trust you by telling them the truth.

Here's the thing: if you're woman enough to decide to marry, you need to be woman enough to stick by your decision and tell your family. I understand not wanting the family to be upset...but it's your life. Please think marriage through. It's not meant to be taken lightly, and you've got time. Good luck.

Both of you go home and just tell them. Waiting is so disrespectful.

Have fun, you're an adult. Don't ask them for money. You're on your own now having sex and engaged. Good luck with that.

If your old enough to consider marriage then you should be old enough to be upfront.
