a) Get a travelcard for the tube/buses. It is the cheapest way to get around town and sometimes the fastest.
b) remember the exchange rate is 2:1 (basically) so double the number of everything you see to figure out the price in dollars (which will be painful).
c) take a look at http://www.tripadvisor.com to get candid photos of your hotel and real people reviews (a must I would say)
d) try to visit things off the beaten path that are not necessarily touristy. Maybe see a football match, or a market, or take a day trip to Bath or Oxford or Cambridge or Plymouth or Dover or something. Get out of London if you can.
e) The temperatures are usually a 'damp cold' this time of year, so if it says "in the 50s" don't think it is a nice sweater and the 50s -- it is more like a trench coat and scarf in the 50s and wet.
f) Enjoy yourself. Remember it is a different country and they do something different than they do in the US. Not better, not worse, just different. Enjoy the difference.

Well, if you're going to be in London... The Tube is your friend!!!
And the Taxi drivers will basically give you a history of the city, whether you want one or not... and the people of London are usually friendly, so you needn't worry..... Oh, and American appliances WILL NOT work in the UK without an adapter AND converter...

Don't bother taking any hair dryers or curling irons there, they won't work, the plugs are different.
