what is poverty?...

pacific islanders can earn under $1 a day easily, but have land, fertile soil, teeming rivers, shelter and family.

chinese women can work up to 20 hours a day in horrendous conditions but in the end they take home enough money to feed the family.

australian families can work 3 jobs, run a family car, send the children to school, but when one of the earners becomes sick the family loses their home and is on the street.

poverty is relative to the society it is found in, and there are many types of poverty and vulnerability.

BUT imagine absolute poverty... you are constantly sick from filthy water, you are agonised with hunger, your children keep dying before they turn 5 no matter how many you have, you have lost 4 sisters to death during childbirth..... and you have no hope. this is true poverty and it IS a bad thing.

of course it is a bad thing! living life in poverty and wondering where your next meal/home/medicine will be coming from is not a desirable life. the only reason why you have asked such a question is because you have the luxury of not being in poverty.

um, yeah. you must be rich.

is it a bad thing to be unable to get medical, dental, or vision care? is is a bad thing to be unable to buy medication? unable to purchase groceries and toilet paper? unable to afford decent housing? unable to pay the heating bill?

wtf do you think?!?

oh yeah, being rich & powerful must be such a drag. damn, i'm so glad i get to struggle financially and put off getting my prescription antibiotics until next week, when i get paid. and you know, i don't really need a window, that cardboard over the hole in the wall works alright. and i suppose i can eat nothing but ramen for three more weeks, cuz i do like to sacrifice my nutrition and the nutrition of my growing fetus for my prescriptions that help me breath. i'm so glad i don't have to be bothered with all that money to pay my bills & tuition.

It is if you want to eat, sleep with a roof over your head, and have decent medical care.

It has bad points, but being rich and powerful also has more downsides than most people realize.
