It might be subject to licence under CITES article 10 Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species). The best thing to do would be to contact Defra wildlife section for advice on this.
They are based in Bristol, and the following link should give you contact details for them.

Hope this helps

No and not easy either-they need a insect based diet with fruit and other plant foods added and a large enclosure. You also need a family group as they are social.

So basically owning one is both really hard and totally against the law without a special license which would be hard for you to get.

I doubt it, he'd probably need a license from DEFRA.
The sad thing is that these are very sociable little animals, they'd be much happier in a group of meerkats than as a solitary pet.
If you're concerned, contact the RSPCA, I couldn't see if Meerkats need a license.

If the UK works like the US - you will have to apply for an exotic pet permit/license to legally own one.

Yes it is but you need to have a permit to do so, they can cost a lot of money. People still probably keep them illegally though :-)

I doubt it - they're wild animals & would probably chew up all your furniture cos they couldn't get out of your home. They are cute, but you really wouldn't want to own one.
