Shorten the beam. Torque, which is the tendency of an object to rotate around its fulcrum, is dependent upon the force and its distance from the fulcrum. The farther from the fulcrum, the less force is necessary, so if you don't change the force (the weight of the load) then you need to shorten the beam to lessen the torque.
