Does anyone know if there is any kind of legislation within UK law, concerning time taken off work by a woman who needs to attend a hospital appointment for a mommogram.
One of my friends had to go for one and now is being asked to make the time up at work, or her pay will be docked.
Could anyone shed some light on this for me please and if possible provide me with link for written proof so that I can print it off for her employers.

I am afriad most of these answers are right - there is no written legislation to cover this - it is down to the employer. Most companies will stipulate that wherever possible medical appointments should be made outside of working time - if your friend is a full time worker then this would be pretty much impossible however her employer is not obliged to give her the time off with pay. One option is her for her to claim back any extra time she has worked recently? Good luck to your friend.

You will find that there is no obligation for an empolyer to give you paid time off for appointments. An understanding employer would firstly ask you if you could make the appointment on a quiet or day off. Then if not possible, you maybe lose a holiday day or lieu time. Some employers may deduct the time off out of your wage but I would imagine the relationship between employer and employee is probably not brill if that happened.

I suppose it would encourage staff to lie and phone in ill if the company went straight to wage deduction.

At the end of the day, we get paid for being at work. Wouldn't it be nice to get paid when we're not there. Easiest way is to work the extra hours and keep them in lieu and offset them against the appointment.

As far as i am aware there is nothing in employment law to cover this YET... However i read up on something a few weeks ago asking for some expert opinions.

The general outcome was that HR Managers should review policies in relation to this however sick leave should be allowed for this. Most policies in relation to attendance/sickness allow time for hospital appointments too however this differs from company to company. I would recomment ACAS website and if she is in a union that she brings it up with them.
May also be worth them speaking with Occ Health if her organisation has one - again depends on how large organisation is etc.

Not completly sure but I think if the time is taken for something medical the employer can't make them work the hours. As for being paid for the time off I think they may be able to stop the pay. Has your friend got a contract with work it may be worth checking it. I think you need to seek advice from a proffessional to be honest.

Sex discrimination law should protect you for this kind of thing.
It has been used to prevent women being sacked / discriminated against for falling pregnant.
A court would expect an employee to be reasonable however, so making the time up seems like a sensible idea.

I can't find any right to time off for this appointment but if they allow men to go to the dentist, doctors etc you could consider a discrimination claim on grounds of sex.

im not sure what the uk law is but my company policy is that for appointments you must present a signed note from the doctor or else pay could be docked for unauthorised absense
