I would look into the sci-fi/fantasy books written by Octavia E. Butler. She has won both Hugo and Nebula awards. In 1995, she became the first science fiction writer to receive MacArthur Foundation "Genius" Grant.
I have read many of her books and have never ran across anyone else like her...

Inkheart and Inkspell by Cornelia Funke. The 3rd book in the trilogy, Inkdawn, comes out in 2008. Great books! I highly recommend them. If you are interested in vampires you should read Laurell K. Hamilton's Anita Blake series.

Give Visitors a try by Bob Chapman. You can get it on Amazon, for less than a fiver her. I don't know how much it is in American money , but it's on Amazon in America as well.

Eragon - The book was much better than the lame movie.
It has a follow up book called Eldest. I haven't read it yet so I can't recommend it at this point.
