there is a Proceedure called CVS ( chorionic villi sampling) that CAN give DNA to determine paternity ... however , as a sonographer for over 11 years I cant EVER remebering a Doc ordering the proceedure for that purpose . It's done in cases where the risk of waiting for the fetus to reach an age when an amniocdntesis can be performed outweighs the risk of not waiting . It's highly specilaized , and most OB's don't perform them ..usually its a perinatologist , or perinatal surgeon .
Chorionic Villa are small blood vessles , like tenticles thatare around the geststaional sac , typically behind the placenta. To sample a needle tipped catheter is guided via Ultrasound to the area and a sample of the blood is taken and sent off for analysis . this is NOT something you wantt to do unless absolutely MEDICALLY necessary, this is a serious MEDICAL proceedure, and an expensive one at that. Upwards of $2,000. Also , the risk of miscarriage is double that of amniocentesis. the risk of bleeding is high seeing as your sampling from blood vessles , and with bleeding can come come gross subchorionic hemmorage , and even abruiption of the placenta ( where it disattached from the wall) later in pregnancy.
I know its difficult NOT knowing who the Daddy is , but at the risk of sounding calloused : she should have though about that BEFORE getting pregnant .
Good luck .

It is possible to do DNA testing while still pregnant, not at this early though. It is better to wait until after the baby is born. These tests carry a risk of miscarriage, and generally can't be done until around 16 weeks

I really do not think there is anything she can do at this stage of pregnancy, but I know they can do it when she is further along, but she will need to get an amniocentisis.... if even there...she should consult her OB about this and see what they have to say ...they would know best how to retreive dna...worse case she is going to have to wait and take him to court after the baby is born and file petition for him to take a dna test...of give the baby one.
Sorry could not help more...

DNA testing can be done as early as the end of the first trimester of pregnancy, starting in the 10th week by the CVS procedure.
(I personally would wait until after the baby is born)

It's a much much better idea to wait until the baby's born. I'm sure the cost of an inutero DNA test would be very high and I know insurance isn't going to cover that!

DNA testing can be done during the second trimester, but it is very expensive. Tell her to do her research before doing this because it is harmful to the child.

anything that could prove it could kill the baby, so no. they will have to wait until the baby is born. until then, maybe it is in his best interest to give her the benefit of the doubt and not abandon her during this difficult time on a hunch.

Nothing she can really do. She just has to wait until she delivers. Even if they do an amnio I dont think they can get DNA from that.

for the health of the mother and child I would wait until the child is born....after that it is really easy and only takes a moment (the results take a little while though)....Good luck to your friend
