Actually, sponges are found in the sea. Natural sponges, at least. They made him one of those man-made sponges for humor, or something. And that pineapple, it is for humor, and it was used for some kind of plot for some episodes. Makes no sense, but it's all in humor. I mean, sure I'm guessing, but it's Spongebob! Humor is everything in that show.

spongebob was originally planned to be a jelly fish, but they changed him to a sponge because kids said that jelly fish hurt people. spongebobs first name was spongeboy but they had to change it because spongeboy was already a trademarked name of a different cartoon. and whe SPONGEbob? sea sponges!
about the pineapple, it fell off the island right above them, and besides, pinapples smell good.

It's a fictional cartoon character and it's a sponge for the fun of it. What else... randomness.

Don't think too hard because you will never understand. That's why it's a kids show, because the kids will just watch and be amused w/out asking questions, even the dumbest show in the world can amuse the lil ones!
