Cell division is a way of renovation and growth for cells. Most cells have a short life span, if they don't divide there is no renewal or growth of tissue or whatever function they serve in the organism. It is also a way of evolution between species through DNA replication and inheritance.

To support the cell theory that all living things are cells and have come from a previous cell. Spontaneous generation, or life coming from nothing, cannot occur and therefore cells need to divide for life to continue.

Well if your only had 1 white blood cell it could not protect your entire body and there are many viruses which enter your body at one time it would be like having AIDS all the time.
