A beautiful mind, but your prof has probably read a million papers on that in the last few years (like Sybil before it).
Monster's Ball is a great study of co-dependence, coping mechanisms, and depression.
Apocolypse Now deals with several psychological issues in the main characters- you might find somethign good there- the megalomaniacal Marlon Brando, the idealist in denial Martin Sheen, the soldiers so co-dependent that they latch on to this obvious dictator (in Brando).
Garden State would be my choice though. Mental Disconnect. Over Medicating. Severe Depression, it goes on and on.
Good luck.

Probably the best 'psycho' portrait is "Taxi Driver" with Robert DeNiro. The script was based on Dostoyevsky's Notes from the Underground. The movie is told almost exclusively through the hero's point of view, and his lack of self awareness means there is no 'diagnosis' of his mental illness. You could visit imdb.com and wikipedia.org to look up more about the film and its writer, Paul Schrader.

Nicholsons character in As Good as it Gets. Dicaprio in The Aviator Howard Hughes had OCD I do not believe they diagnosed him.
I thought of another incase you look agian, the mother in Requim for a dream played by Ellen Burstyn as well as the other characters if addiction is counted as a mental illness.

Google the following http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_films_featuring_mental_illness
for the specific category of illness the film puts its focus and browse the film's info and pick the character out the list of credits to the film at imdb.com. Then do a google search with the name of the character to get his/her bio.
Good luck...

I would think the movie proof would be a good choice... qwenth paltro is in it.. it was a play first so there is probably a lot of research out there on the main character and his illness

Forest Gump
A Beautiful Mind (although that was diagnosed)
Radio
Pumpkin
Not sure if those movies diagnosed the illness, but they are all good movies. Well Pumpkin is a bit dumb.
