I can't decide what to do. I already have a windows XP laptop that works, but I also want a desktop. So I have about $600 right now, should I get another windows, which of course would be better than my laptop, or should I wait until I have enough for a Mac. Advice?

It depends who you are and what you are doing on a computer.
If you do a lot of photoshop and multimedia, go with a mac.
If you do a lot of programming, go with a PC (MAC is slow to do these things). My new laptop is a MAC and it gave me a lot of pain:
matlab is slow, spss is slow, java is slow, microsoft words is slow and crashing...

But it has nice look, great battery, and good for watching DVD

$600 can give you a pretty decent PC these days.

Save up and get a Mac. Trust me, they are faster and "smarter" than windows computers.

I have an iBook G4, a 2005 model laptop. The new macbooks (laptops) and the new iMacs (Desktops) are fresh from 2006 and 2007. Imagine what advancments that apple has made to make their computers faster. It may take a while to raise $2000 (Some cost more, some cost less) for a Mac but trust me dude, Its worth it!

One more thing, all of the new iMac G5s have a built in iSight (Web cam) right on the display. Pretty sweet!

Remember, iMacs don't have a tower (The actual computer). The entire hard drive is built right into the display! The CD/DVD drive, USB ports, Headphone jack. All of it is right in the display! Keep in mind because you basically can't buy a larger display without getting a new iMac, choose carefully.

Yow, I wouldn't even think about Mac... You need a desktop? Check out Dell and get an awesome Desktop with Vista plus a 22 inch screen. Heck, that's all you need, and that only cost $800

Why Mac? Sometimes I wonder why Mac PCs are so expensive because they're so limited to softwares, aren't any good at playing games... Yeah, the virus crap which can be easily prevented is what makes Mac a nice machine. Otherwise, get a Windows PC; you get more for your money.

Depends on what you need it for. Macs are better for digital editing, but PCs are catching up fast. Macs are simpler, but more expensive. If you're a gamer, PCs are where it's at. Unless you really need a dual boot system, forget that PC-on-a-Mac stuff - why pay for a Mac (PLUS Windows and other programs) when you use a PC? PCs have more *koff* torrentable stuff out there. Macs are 'cooler'. Windows Vista sucks right now.

So now that you're thoroughly confused, buy what you want and punch anyone who hates your new computer.

Dont buy mac. If money is an issue you should consider buying a new "old stock" desktop or one that has come off corporate lease and is still under warranty. Many of these are available on ebay.

Mac users believe they are immune to the problems that windows users have. They have their own problems and some of the same ones as windows based operating systems. IF mac ever becomes as widespread as windows they will also be attacked by hackers and viruses.

I say Wait till leopard comes out which when it does it will be on all new machines and you will probably have enough money. Don't spend $600 on a PC that you know will get viruses even on vista! You have seen the comericals you know what macs can do!!

Avoid Vista - it's REALLY bad.

Get a good ex-corporate box off of eBay, something like a Dell Optiplex GX260 with at least a 2ghz P4 processor. Get one which still has Windows on it, or get a cracked copy of XP Pro from http://www.warezstore.com for about $35 and put that on.

Macs are pretty but overpriced - and intended for gay magazine designers and journo-girls.

If you want to be SERIOUSLY cool, get an old corporate Dell and put Linux (either Vector Linux or PCLinuxOS) on it. Then you can forget about viruses and malware !

I would go ahead and get a PC:
- They're generally cheaper...
- Windows XP isn't Win95 and most (98%) of the "problems" you'll hear Mac users complain about haven't existed in almost a decade.
- Upgradeable...
etc.

Don't make me laugh. Dell suck. If you get a Dell with vista then you are just digging your own ditch. Get a Mac. Mac's have no viruses and are way ahead of Windows. You will not regret it if you get a mac. Mac=Life.
